Did you know?: x% of y = y% of x

A useful tip for everyday life

Probably my shortest post ever, but I think it is so worth it to do given that this simple principle helps literally everyone in their daily lives and I believe we are not as aware as we should be about it.

I recently heard there was a whole ordeal on Twitter about this, and this is how I realized that this math principle was true! I have a vague doubt that I might have learned this at some point, but I am 100% sure that I have not been using it in my daily life.

I tried looking for the thread and was not able to find it, but it looks like people in 2016 had a similar realization. Click here to see the Twitter thread in 2016.

For the curious, here is the simple proof:

x% of y

x/100*y

x*y/100 = z

Simply flip the x and the y and you get y% of x.

y% of x

y/100*x

y*x/100 = x*y/100 = z
